The Hidden Dangers of Gum Disease: What You Need to Know

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic inflammation of the gums and supporting structures. It’s a major cause of tooth loss, and understanding its causes, symptoms, and treatment options is crucial for maintaining good oral health.

 What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a chronic inflammation of the gums and supporting structures. It occurs when small pieces of food and bacteria stay on the teeth for a while, forming a film called plaque. If not removed, plaque can harden and become calculus, also known as tartar.

 Causes of Gum Disease

– When small pieces of food and bacteria stay on the teeth for a while, they form a film called plaque.

– If not removed, plaque can harden and become calculus, also known as tartar.

– Tartar can cause inflammation and lead to gum disease.

 Symptoms of Gum Disease

– Bleeding or sore gums

– Red or swollen gums

– Bad breath or taste

– Loose teeth

– Sensitivity

– Pain when chewing

– Gums pulling away from teeth

– Spaces between teeth

 Treatment Options

– Early stages of gum disease, known as gingivitis, can often be treated by a cleaning and changes to oral hygiene care.

– Later and more severe forms of gum disease, known as periodontitis, may require more extensive treatment, such as gum treatment or deep cleaning.

 Role of Dental Professionals

Regular dental visits (at least twice a year) can help detect gum disease early and improve your oral health. Through x-rays and consults, dental professionals can detect gum disease and provide you with the necessary knowledge and treatment required.

At-Home Care

– Flossing: helps to remove food from in between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach. Floss before brushing to allow the toothpaste to go in between teeth and protect them.

– Brushing: brushing in circles and twice a day for 2 minutes is recommended, using toothpaste with fluoride.

– Mouthwash: after brushing, helps to further strengthen teeth.

Benefits of Dental Visits and Cost of Treatment

– If you experience any of the above signs, try visiting your dentist. A simple cleaning is much cheaper than a deep cleaning, which is more extensive.

– Remember, prevention is better than treatment. Visiting your dentist at least twice a year can not only improve your overall health but cost you much less.

Take-Home Message

– Gum disease is a prevalent infectious oral disease that is entirely treatable and preventable.

– Regular dental visits can help detect gum disease early and improve your oral health.

– A good oral care routine is essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
