Dental procedures: Explained
Basically Dentistry: K Bhagwandin
Dental cleanings are a routine procedure done to remove plaque build up and stains from around and in between your teeth. It can be scary if you haven’t done it before. Today I’ll briefly explain how the procedure goes.
- We use an instrument called an ultrasonic scaler which sends out water which helps to remove plaque and stains . This instrument makes a high pitched sound but that is about all the sounds it makes.
- We use another instrument called a suction which is basically a vacuum to remove all this water
- This water is safe ,so you’re okay if accidentally swallowed.
- Every dental professional has their own system but we clean all around your teeth and in between
- You may experience some sensitivity especially when removing hard calculus(hard plaque) . It’s okay to let us know if you need a break.
- Once your scaling is done, we polish your teeth. We use a polish brush which functions similar to an electric toothbrush and we use a paste to help polish your teeth to get them shiny and smooth .
Kids-Polishing
- It is advisable to take the little ones for their cleanings when they’re still small so that they can get used to going to the dentist and they don’t associate it with pain and injections.
- For kids we usually do polishing -which they can watch and does not hurt them.
- This allows them to become comfortable with the dentist and in the event they have pain they may be more motivated to come in for treatment.
- We can also place fissure sealants -these are resins which we place on permanent molars to protect them from cavities.
TIPS
- It can be new and scary if it is your first cleaning, it’s important to just relax and breathe through your nose. Some people hold their breath which can be uncomfortable if possible breath through your nose. If this isn’t possible let your dental professional know so they can give you breaks in between.
- It feels like a water spray on your teeth so it isn’t too scary.
- If you currently have the flu or sinusitis you may think about doing the cleaning on another day as laying down with instruments and water in your mouth may make it an uncomfortable procedure.
- If you have any other questions or concerns you’re welcome to bring it up before the procedure starts.
